Bon Pchum Ben 2006

The Cambodian Community of Hawai`i would like to announce that we will be holding a ceremony to commemorate Pchum Ben on Sunday, September 24, 2006 at:

Wat Dhammavira of Hawaii
87-1109 Iliili Road
Waianae, HI 96792
Tel: (808) 668-7367

Please join us at the temple in Waianae from 8:00am to 1:00pm, to present offerings to the monks and to honor our ancestors. All monies received during the Bon Pchum Ben will be donated to the temple.

This year, we are very pleased to have Venerable Sophan Seng, a Khmer monk, with us here in Hawai`i. Born and raised in Cambodia, Venerable Sophan has recently been living in Alberta, Canada, where he was an integral part of the Cambodian Community of Calgary. Venerable Sophan will be present with the other monks at Bon Pchum Ben.

Pchum Ben, also known as the Festival of the Dead or "Ancestors' Day," is one of the most important events in the Khmer Buddhist calendar. Traditionally, in the days leading up to the full moon of Bon Pchum Ben, Buddhists visit the temples and make offerings in memory of their deceased relatives. On the day of the full moon, the temples come to life with music and celebrations in honor of the dead. Pchum Ben is a time of reunion and commemoration, and a time to ask for blessings in the year ahead.

Following the traditional ceremony and lunch, which will be served only until 1:00pm, the Khmer Rainbow Band will perform live music from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.

If you have any questions, please contact us at 808-330-3684. We look forward to seeing you and your families on September 24th.
