Proclamation

WHEREAS, the Khmer New Year Celebration is based on the lunar calendar and is celebrated each April, the end of the harvest season; and

WHEREAS, the Cambodian people have a rich culture that encompasses art, architecture, music, and dance; and

WHEREAS, the Cambodian Community of Hawai’I (CCH), is a non-profit organization that promotes the Khmer culture and offers fellowship and goodwill among people of Khmer heritage as well as those who bear an interest in Cambodia; and

WHEREAS, although meeting informally for decades, CCH was formally incorporated in 2005, and hosted its first New Year celebration in 2005, the first major Cambodian celebration in our islands; and

WHEREAS, with approximately 600 Cambodian individuals living in our islands today, the Khmer New Year celebration provides them the opportunity to share and preserve their cultural treasures for future generations; and

WHEREAS, this year's Khmer New Year festivities will be held on April 15, 2006, at Pu'uhale Elementary School, and will feature Khmer traditional ceremonies, dance, fashion, food, songs, music, games, and storytelling.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, LINDA LINGLE, Governor of the State of Hawai's and I, JAMES, R. "DUKE" AIONA, JR., Lieutenant Governor, do hereby proclaim Saturday, April 15, 2006, as

KHMER NEW YEAR
CELEBRATION DAY

in Hawai'i, and thank the Cambodian community for their many contributions to our diverse island culture.

Done at the State Capitol, in the Executive Chambers, Honolulu, Sate of Hawai's, this thirteenth day of April 2006.
