On January 13, 2008, Mr. Thavro Phim, an East-West Center alumni, was in Honolulu to do a special presentation on Khmer dance at the Center. He presented two presentations, one at 2pm, and a second duplicate presentation at 3:30pm on Sunday afternoon. These presentations were open to the public, and all Cambodian Community of Hawai'i members were welcome to attend. Also, CCH a reception for him after the last presentation at the Center.

On December 16, 2007, as the year drew to a close, CCH gathered to celebrate the holiday season with community members, their families and friends to enjoy good food and frienship. Also, we wished a fond farewell to Ms. Sythan Leam, who after one year with us, planned to return to Cambodia, following the success of her operations.

On November 9, 10, and 11, the University of Hawaii and the East-West Center sponsored a three-day conference entitled Hawai‘i and Cambodia : Revitalizing and Sustaining Connections. The conference included roundtable discussions on past and on-going projects, talks by scholars and community members about educational opportunities, and lectures on conservation efforts in Cambodia.

As part of our mission to provide awareness about issues that affect Khmer communities across the globe, on August 23, CCH held a special screening of “Sentenced Home,” a documentary about Cambodian Americans who face deportation to Cambodia.

Journeying across the Pacific Ocean, representatives of the Cambodian Association of America (CAA), a nonprofit organization based in Long Beach, California, met with members of the Cambodian Community of Hawaii (CCH) while in Honolulu to attend a conference. CAA representatives and their families developed great working relationships and friendships with their counterparts in CCH, and both groups will continue to help each other and support each other in addressing the needs of the larger Khmer American community and in celebrating the wonders of Khmer culture.

In July 2007, more than 100 Khmer, Lao, Hmong, and Vietnamese Americans gathered together for the 10th anniversary of the Southeast Asian Resource Action Council (SEARAC) conference in Washington, D.C. Participants, many of whom had attended previous conferences, were individually invited by SEARAC to attend. Discussion topics included immigration, deportation, physical and mental health issues, educational concerns, and other challenges faced by Southeast Asian American communities.

This is our Second Annual Floating Lantern Festival, in which the descendants from various Southeast Asian countries have combined their efforts to share the richness of their cultures with the Honolulu community. All are invited to enjoy traditional dances and songs, participate in sports demonstrations, and sample delectable ethnic foods. At sunset, we will light candles for the lanterns to be set afloat in the ocean.

The Cambodian Community of Hawaii commemorated the beginning of a New Year with Buddhist blessings, Khmer classical and folk dances, Khmer art and handcrafts, Khmer cuisine, and social dance with live band. On Saturday, April 15, 2006, CCH held a two-part program:
Part I: 9am-12pm (chanting with monks)
Part II: 5pm-10pm (dinner/cultural program)
The events were attended by more than 500 people, including Hawaii's Governor, U.S. Senator, U.S. Congressman, and other state representatives, as well as CCH family members and friends.

The Cambodian Community of Hawaii and the West Pearl Harbor Rotary both connected with Sar after he received a Silver Star award in January for actions in Afghanistan. The Cambodian Community of Hawaii has invited Sar as the keynote speaker at their Cambodian Lunar New Year celebration on April 15.

Southeast Asian Floating Lantern Festival: | Photos Festival of Hope & Lights

Four-country Southeast Asian Floating Lantern Festival, held at Magic Island (Ala Moana Beach Park). Food and cultural performances from Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand. This was the first time since the CCH was officially formed as an organization that four Southeast Asian countries worked together to celebrate their customs and traditions.

CCH continued to commemorate their heritage at this Cambodian New Year celebration. Classical and folk dances, music, and a fashion show were on the lively agenda to welcome the Year of the Rooster.
