MESSAGE FROM U.S. SENATOR DANIEL K. AKAKA

It is with great pleasure that I extend my warmest aloha and congratulations to the Cambodian Community on the occasion of the Khmer New Year.

I join you in spirit to recognize the major contributions of the Cambodian community in helping Hawaii to become the “Melting Pot of the Pacific”. Cambodians are in all facets of life in Hawaii—culture and the arts, education, business, government and community service. With them, they brought the culture and traditions of their homeland. Khmer New Year is a celebration that fosters pride of culture and traditions and ultimately, one’s sense of identity and roots.

In the celebration of this national holiday, which originated from Bramhmanism, Cambodian traditions urge a time to celebrate Moha Sangkran on the first day, Wanabot on the second day, and Leung Sakk on the third day of Khmer New Year. I welcome this opportunity to join the Cambodian community of the Pithi Srang Preah ceremony, gratifying and giving special baths or showers to the Buddha statues, Khmer monks, elders, grandparents, and parents.

On this occasion of the Khmer New Year, may peace, harmony and happiness be with each and every one of you. Happy Khmer New Year!

Aloha pumehana,

DANIEL K. AKAKA
U.S. Senator
