Message

In Recognition of the Khmer New Year Celebration

April 9, 2005

Chum reap sour and best wishes to all the members of the Khmer (Cambodian) community and everyone else attending the Khmer New Year Celebration being held at the Puuhale Elementary School. I apologize that my work in Congress prevented me from sharing this message with you in person.

Congratulations to those who participated in the planning and production of this important cultural event. The Khmer New Year Celebration provides the perfect opportunity for people from the Khmer community to renew friendships and strengthen ties with other Khmer-Americans living in Hawaii. This event also provides other ethnic groups and communities the chance to learn more about the culture & arts, religion and history of Khmer (Cambodia).

The Khmer New Year Celebration serves as a reminder for the younger generation of Khmer descendants about the struggles faced by elders in their “homeland” and the importance of preserving the memories of those who sacrificed much in the name of freedom and liberty. Khmer-American youth must continue to pay homage to their elders who migrated to Hawaii and America from Khmer, and were able to establish a good life and promising future for them and their families.

I hope the Khmer New Celebration is a success and everyone has a good time. Awkun ch’ran or mahalo for your friendship and support of my work in Congress. I wish you all good health, longevity, happiness and success in the future.
